Former France international Jerome Rothen has expressed his dissatisfaction with Manchester City after reports emerged that they have reached an agreement to sign Girona winger Savio.
The deal is particularly controversial because Savio was signed by Troyes, which is part of the City Football Group, and was immediately loaned out to PSV.
Following his stint in the Netherlands, the Brazilian player joined Girona for the 2023/24 season, without having played a single match for Troyes.
Savio has been in impressive form in Spain, with seven goals and as many assists in 27 appearances across all competitions.
Despite interest from other clubs, it has been reported that City has agreed to sign him at the end of the season, with the deal facilitated between Girona and Cityzens through Troyes.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement, stating that documents are set to be signed in the coming days, and the deal will be completed by the end of February, allowing Savio to join Pep Guardiola’s side for pre-season in July.
The deal has sparked criticism and confusion, with former France and Paris Saint-Germain winger Rothen heavily criticizing the owners of the European champions.
He expressed feeling “angry” and “ashamed,” and called for the City group to cut ties with Troyes. Rothen also suggested that if the City group doesn’t comply, the club’s fans should boycott matches.
Rothen denounced the City group, stating that French football does not need them and expressed disappointment in the use of Troyes as a springboard for certain players.
He emphasized the need for stability and denounced the downward spiral of the club since the group’s arrival. Rothen called for protests against the City group and even suggested a boycott of matches to send a clear message.
