Real Madrid megastar Jude Bellingham holds the belief that Phil Foden, who plays for Manchester City, would paradoxically make quite an adept goalkeeper. Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, made waves back in October 2022 when he claimed that the 23-year-old Foden could adapt to playing as a left-back. Guardiola had previously stated in 2021 that the Englishman is capable of playing in five different positions. Despite Foden’s versatility, he has never played in an actual defensive position consistently, except for as a left-back where he was tested as a youngster.
Jude Bellingham, who has trained and played with Phil Foden for England for several years, believes Foden would do a good job in goal. Bellingham has expressed his belief that Foden would be good in net, citing that he is very active and would be able to jump around to block shots. However, Foden himself dismissed the idea, stating that he never wanted to play in goal and that Bellingham’s suggestion is baseless.
Admittedly, Phil Foden may not be the best goalkeeper due to his height and lack of experience in the position, despite Bellingham’s claim. Even if Foden were to excel in such a role, football fans across the world would likely be disappointed at the prospect of a talented player such as Foden being largely uninvolved in the game.
Phil Foden is known to be an exceptionally intelligent and majestic player whose technical skill puts him a cut above others. His ability to weave magic on the pitch makes him a fan favorite. In an era where physicality and systems often take precedence, Foden is a reminder of days when technique and individual brilliance ruled the game.
Given his exceptional talent, some might oppose Bellingham’s suggestion. However, the idea of Foden in goal remains an entertaining and interesting thought for avid football fans.
