Sergio Aguero, a Manchester City legend, expressed his disappointment at not being offered a new contract in 2021. The Argentinian retired from football at the age of 33 in December of that year due to a heart condition, shortly after signing for FC Barcelona on a free transfer following his departure from Manchester City after a decade-long stay.
Aguero is Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer with 260 goals, having joined the Premier League in 2011 from Atletico Madrid for £35 million. He made 390 appearances during his time at the Etihad Stadium, helping the team to win 14 trophies, including five Premier League titles.
His final match for Manchester City was the UEFA Champions League Final defeat against Chelsea in 2021, where he came off the bench. Aguero began and ended his Premier League career with a brace, scoring twice in a 5-0 win over Everton in his final appearance at the Etihad Stadium. Despite making just eight starts in his final season with Manchester City, he moved to Barcelona after being informed that his contract would not be extended beyond the summer of 2021.
In a recent interview, Aguero revealed his disappointment at not being offered a new deal by Manchester City. He mentioned that the club informed him in January 2021 that they would not renew his contract, despite his willingness to play and help the team from the bench.
Manchester City did not sign a replacement for Aguero until 2022 when they acquired Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for £51 million. Haaland had a prolific season, scoring 52 goals in 53 appearances and breaking the Premier League goalscoring record. Aguero’s disappointment at not being offered a new contract in 2021 was evident, especially after expressing his willingness to continue with the team. Ultimately, his retirement marked the end of an era for Manchester City.
