Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has addressed the recent lack of playing time for Jack Grealish.

Grealish has not started a Premier League game since Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United in December and has been struggling to maintain a regular spot in the starting lineup.

Guardiola spoke in a press conference ahead of City’s match against Everton, emphasizing the need for Grealish to step up his game.

He acknowledged that Grealish is competing with high-performing players and needs to return to his best form, particularly considering his impressive performance at Aston Villa prior to joining Manchester City.

He said: “Jack is doing steps to get to his best level. Now he’s competing with the players who are playing at a high, high level and that is the only reason why. He has to get back to what he was especially last season and all the period at Villa.

“I am looking forward to giving him minutes. This season was not like last season but he’s getting better. That’s what we’re looking for. Always I’m pleased with all my players and Jack as well.

“It’s not a big, big problem. Completely the opposite. Now he’s making steps to get to his best and that’s all. We need him and need everyone. We need Jack. I am looking forward to having him back to his best and giving him minutes.”

Despite starting 41 games across all competitions last season, Grealish has only been in the starting XI on seven occasions in the Premier League this season. He has scored three goals and delivered one assist, which puts him behind other players in terms of goal contributions.

However, Guardiola displayed confidence in Grealish’s ability to improve and contribute more to the team. He emphasized that Grealish’s development is a priority and that he is looking forward to seeing the winger return to his best form.

Despite the lack of playing time and contribution this season, Guardiola’s unwavering faith in Grealish is a positive sign for the player. It shows that the manager believes in his potential and is committed to helping him reach his peak performance level.

Guardiola’s comments indicate that Grealish has the support and encouragement of the coaching staff, and the winger will likely be given opportunities to prove himself on the field. With Guardiola’s backing, Grealish has a chance to overcome his current struggles and make a significant impact for Manchester City in the future.
