Gary Neville has weighed in on the debate about which manager has been more successful in the Premier League over the past six years: Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola.

The two have been top contenders in the English top-flight, and the question of who’s done a better job at their respective clubs has stirred continued discussion.

Pep Guardiola, who joined Manchester City in 2015, has led the club to an impressive 16 trophies. In contrast, Jurgen Klopp, who became Liverpool’s manager in 2016, has won seven.

However, it’s important to consider other factors besides silverware when evaluating their overall performance. The context and scope of the challenges they’ve faced, as well as their level of dominance during their tenure, are also crucial.

Gary Neville’s opinion is that Klopp has outperformed Guardiola in the last six years. On “Sky Sports’ The Gary Neville Podcast”, he stated,

“Manchester City have been incredible, [Pep] Guardiola’s a genius. [Jurgen] Klopp’s been the best manager I’ve seen in the last six years because of what he’s had to do against Guardiola with the resources that he’s had”.

Notably, Klopp himself acknowledged in December that Guardiola’s Manchester City side is the best team he has seen in the past decade. The debate over who the better manager is becomes more complex when considering their different tasks at their respective clubs.

While Klopp managed a more challenging situation, Guardiola has been more dominant and tactically flexible. Guardiola’s far-sighted approach to both player management and squad building sets him apart as a manager.

With Guardiola’s tactical flexibility and shrewd squad building ability, he has edged out Klopp in the debate over who is the better manager in the Premier League over the past six years.

Klopp, though successful, falls short of Guardiola when considering the complete scope of attributes that define a successful manager. Their respective approaches demonstrate that despite Klopp’s success with Liverpool, the consensus might lean towards Guardiola’s managerial acumen.
