Gareth Southgate recently received advice regarding the potential inclusion of Phil Foden in the England starting XI along with Jude Bellingham in central positions.
Foden demonstrated his prowess in Manchester City’s recent 3-1 victory over Brentford by dynamically inspiring the team to victory. Despite Brentford taking an early lead, Foden orchestrated a comeback by capitalizing on an opening and executing two additional goals to secure the win.
This notable performance has garnered admiration from both fans and manager Pep Guardiola, who has touted Foden’s current stint as the best of his career.
Former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has echoed this sentiment, advocating for Foden’s utilization in a central role for England. Following the match, Carragher stated on Sky Sports that Bellingham is the sole player in the national squad that can rival Foden’s natural talent.
He supported the idea of both players cohesively occupying the midfield, emphasizing that Southgate could benefit from being bolder in his squad selection based on the two players’ quality. He also acknowledged that Foden has excelled in a central role in Spain alongside Bellingham as No 8s.
In light of the upcoming Euro 2024, Southgate may find it challenging to deviate drastically from his current strategy. Nonetheless, the argument in favor of Foden partnering with Bellingham appears sound.
Both players possess attacking flair and versatility without shying away from defensive responsibilities. With the added presence of Declan Rice providing defensive support, there is a strong case for deploying this midfield trio without concerns about defensive vulnerability.
Another argument presented against Foden’s central role is his positional placement at Manchester City. However, with Guardiola reshaping Foden’s role at the club, this rationale no longer holds water.
It’s an opportune time for Southgate to reassess his stance and consider the synergy Foden and Bellingham could bring to the England midfield.
