Manchester City are reportedly prepared to invest €40m (£34m) in acquiring the services of Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta, according to sources at InterLive.it. Despite interest from Inter Milan, it is believed that Pep Guardiola’s team is best positioned to meet Atalanta’s valuation for the Italian international.

Scalvini, primarily a centre-back, has also showcased his versatility by playing in a holding midfield role on several occasions. At just 20 years old, he has already earned 7 senior caps for his national team, highlighting his promising potential.

Although Manchester City boasts a strong pool of defensive options including Ruben Dias, John Stones, Josko Gvardiol, Nathan Ake, and Manuel Akanji, Stones’s injury history could prompt Guardiola to seek additional cover. Stones’s ability to feature in more advanced roles adds an extra dimension to City’s squad, making him a unique asset.

Given Scalvini’s ability to adapt to different positions, City’s scouting team may view him as a competitor for Stones. Furthermore, his young age suggests that he could serve as a long-term investment and potentially succeed Stones in the future.

While City is said to be the frontrunner for Scalvini’s signature, other Premier League clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool are also rumored to be interested in the defender come the summer transfer window. Despite potential competition, Scalvini is reportedly open to a move to the Premier League, with City appearing as the most attractive destination for the talented player if he decides to depart Atalanta.
