Pundit Steve Nicol believes that Manchester City is one of the two Premier League clubs in contention to sign Kylian Mbappe, according to recent reports.
This comes after it was reported that Mbappe has communicated to Paris Saint-Germain that he intends to leave the club once his contract expires this summer.
Real Madrid has been the anticipated destination for Mbappe, but Nicol has suggested that there are two clubs in the Premier League that could potentially secure a deal for the French attacker.
Nicol made these comments in a recent video shared on the ESPN FC YouTube channel, where he mentioned that City and Liverpool are the two Premier League clubs with the best chance of signing Mbappe.
He said: “City or Liverpool. The best players want to go to the best teams and they want to go to teams that are winning.
“[Erling] Haaland went to Man City because they were winning. Okay, I guess I forgot about his dad and there’s a connection there. But at the end of the day, if Manchester City were consistently third and fourth, he’d have gone to the team that were consistently first like Man City.”
While Mbappe has had an impressive career at PSG, scoring 243 goals and providing 105 assists in 290 appearances across all competitions, his current high wages and ambition to play for Real Madrid could make a potential move to City questionable.
Unless Real Madrid is no longer an option for Mbappe or if he is willing to accept a significant pay cut, City may not find it worthwhile to pursue the French star.
Despite these considerations, the possibility of City signing Mbappe cannot be completely ruled out. However, it would depend on various factors, including Mbappe’s willingness to adjust his wage demands and his overall career ambitions. For now, the likelihood of this happening remains uncertain.
