West Ham United is currently in the lead to sign Kalvin Phillips, but they are facing difficulties in reaching an agreement due to Manchester City’s high demands. According to Football Insider, West Ham United is the frontrunner in the race to secure the signature of Kalvin Phillips, a £45 million midfield ace who could potentially leave Manchester City on a loan deal. However, Manchester City is demanding a substantial loan fee, which has created a hurdle in the negotiations.
Phillips has attracted interest from several clubs as he seeks to make an immediate exit from Manchester City before the January transfer window closes. Since joining Manchester City in the summer of 2022, Phillips has made only six starts for the club and is concerned about his place in the England squad if his situation remains the same. As a result, a departure on loan until the summer seems to be a favorable option for the midfielder.
Reports suggest that West Ham has initiated talks to sign Phillips, and manager David Moyes is keen on securing the England international. However, concerns have arisen over Manchester City’s loan fee demands, which are said to be in the range of £6-7 million. Despite their reluctance to pay such a high fee, West Ham is considered the preferred destination for Phillips, and they may continue negotiations with Manchester City in an attempt to find a more reasonable agreement.
Manchester City is eager to mitigate their losses on Phillips, but their demand for a significant loan fee has dissuaded teams like Newcastle United from pursuing the midfielder. The same situation could apply to West Ham, who are leading the race but may reconsider if Manchester City does not adjust their demands. Additionally, Tottenham is also a potential option for Phillips, although they view him as a backup plan to other transfer targets. This leaves West Ham with a time-sensitive decision on whether to meet Manchester City’s high loan fee demands for a short-term deal.
