Vincent Kompany has expressed his belief that Manchester City would be eager to retain the services of Pep Guardiola for another two decades, if the choice was theirs.
As Manchester City gear up to face off against Burnley on Wednesday, both managers have shared their thoughts on each other. Pep Guardiola also commended Vincent Kompany for his ability to develop players under his guidance.
In addition, Guardiola praised Burnley’s manager’s accurate assessment of Jeremy Doku, whom Guardiola consulted before City signed him over the summer.
Vincent Kompany also echoed Guardiola’s sentiments, stating that Manchester City would happily keep Guardiola for another 20 years if it were up to them. According to the former City captain, it’s a very personal question and one that Guardiola should answer directly, but he wishes for the Sky Blues to keep him fresh and maintain his longevity.
“Honestly, it’s the question [about how long Pep Guardiola will manage Manchester City for] that you have to ask him personally. It’s a very personal question. I know from City’s point of view that if you can keep him another 20 years, keep him another 20 years, whatever you need to do to keep him fresh, right?”, he said (via BeanymanSports2’s YouTube channel).
Kompany added, “Honestly, you have to ask him the question. My feeling is always, you see people as superhuman sometimes, although they’re human, sometimes you see them as superhuman. Who am I to discuss any kind of limits to people who are pushing boundaries every day? But I know that those are very, very personal questions.”
“From my side, I wish him and I wish these guys [other top managers] longevity because they make the game better and the rest is so personal.”
Kompany views top managers like Guardiola as superhuman who push boundaries daily, making the game better. This is why he desires longevity for them. From his perspective, they improve the sport, and their career lengths are personal.
While previous managers like Joe Mercer, Roberto Mancini, and Manuel Pellegrini are remembered for their accomplishments, Pep Guardiola has excelled more than any other manager in Manchester. Based on his unrivaled impact, Vincent Kompany justifiably regards Guardiola as the most exceptional manager in Manchester City’s history. Furthermore, Kyle Walker also views Guardiola as one of the best managers, if not the best, in world football.
Considering all of these factors, it is evident that Manchester City has every reason to hope that Guardiola extends his stay at the Etihad Stadium for as long as he desires. Nevertheless, it is improbable that Guardiola will remain as City’s manager for another two decades. However, the possibility exists that he may surpass Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy at Manchester United if he does.
