Real Madrid is said to be ready to pay €25 million to secure the signature of 21-year-old Brazilian defender Yan Couto from Manchester City. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid is eyeing Couto as they are in the market for a right-back ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window.

Yan Couto spent most of his formative years in Brazil before joining Manchester City’s youth division in July 2020. However, he has not yet been able to establish himself in the first team at the Etihad Stadium. Instead, he has been sent out on loan, most recently to Girona FC, where he has impressed with two goals and seven assists in 26 appearances.

With his return to Manchester City in the summer, Couto will have only twelve months remaining on his contract. This situation has caught the attention of Real Madrid, who are keen on securing the services of the young Brazilian.

Real Madrid’s interest in Couto is understandable, given the advancing age of their current right-back, Dani Carvajal, and the uncertain futures of his backups, Lucas Vazquez and Nacho. The Spanish international is on the wrong side of 30, and his performance levels have been dropping in recent seasons. Neither Vazquez nor Nacho are seen as adequate replacements for Carvajal, hence the interest in Couto.

It remains to be seen whether Manchester City will seek to integrate Couto into their first-team squad, but if not, Real Madrid seems ready to pay the reported €25 million to secure his services. With the young Brazilian showing promise during his loan spells, it is likely that Real Madrid sees him as a long-term solution to their right-back issues.
