Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Kalvin Phillips will depart the Etihad Stadium this month as he completes a loan move to West Ham United for the remainder of the campaign.

Despite being part of Guardiola’s treble-winning squad last season, the 28-year-old midfielder has made just six starts for Manchester City in the past 18 months.

Phillips, who moved from Leeds United for £42 million in July 2022, has failed to make a significant impact with the Manchester City squad, featuring just 31 times for the Sky Blues.

In a bid to reignite his career and boost his hopes of being selected for the European Championships, Phillips has opted to leave the club and join David Moyes’ side at West Ham.

It is reported that the Hammers will have the option to sign Phillips on a permanent basis during the summer transfer window.

The England international’s decision to leave Manchester City has attracted interest from other clubs, including Newcastle United, Fulham, Crystal Palace, and Juventus.

However, West Ham United emerged as the winners in the race for Phillips’ signature.

Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Tottenham in the Emirates FA Cup, Guardiola confirmed that the midfielder was swapping the North West for east London.

He expressed his hope that Phillips could play the minutes he deserves and praised him as an exceptional human being.

“He travelled yesterday to make medical tests but it’s not completely done,” said the City boss.

“Hopefully he can play the minutes he deserves and I couldn’t give to him. He’s an exceptional human being.”

Despite his limited playing time at Manchester City, Phillips has managed to score for the club, netting from the penalty spot against Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA Champions League group stages in December.

He has also won five trophies during his time at Manchester City, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and Emirates FA Cup.

In conclusion, Phillips’ move to West Ham United presents a new opportunity for the midfielder to showcase his skills and potentially secure a permanent deal with the London club.

Guardiola’s confirmation of the transfer signifies a new chapter for Phillips as he seeks to establish himself at his new club and impress on the international stage.
