Renowned football journalist Guillem Balague has raised the possibility of Xabi Alonso taking over as manager of Manchester City in the future to replace current manager Pep Guardiola.
This is an interesting proposition, particularly following the announcement from Jurgen Klopp about stepping down as the Liverpool manager at the end of the season, with Alonso being cited as a potential replacement for Klopp as well.
Alonso, who is currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, has seen his future prospects being discussed in the media.
Balague, in a recent video on his YouTube channel, mentioned that Alonso had initially considered managing a top club in Germany, followed by the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and now potentially Manchester City.
He said: “When he moved to Leverkusen he had an idea which was if it goes well here in Germany, then Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Liverpool and I will add Manchester City, it could be a possibility, if it went badly he could go to Real Sociedad.”
This suggests that Alonso has a long-term vision for his coaching career, and City could be a possibility as they would require a replacement for Guardiola when his contract expires in 2025.
Alonso’s experience as a player, having featured for prominent clubs such as Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich under Guardiola’s management, has prepared him for a potential future in top-flight football management.
His success at Bayer Leverkusen, where he has managed 64 games and led the team to the top of the Bundesliga, further strengthens the case for his potential future at bigger clubs.
If Alonso continues his successful run as Leverkusen’s manager and is available when Guardiola’s reign at City comes to an end, he could indeed be considered as a strong candidate.
This seems to be the stance taken by Balague and football enthusiasts. As such, Alonso’s future as a potential managerial replacement for Guardiola at Manchester City appears to be an intriguing proposition worth watching.
