The former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy supports Kalvin Phillips’ move to West Ham United on loan and believes the London club is getting a great player despite his lack of game time at Manchester City.

The 28-year-old midfielder is expected to join the Hammers soon after undergoing a medical on Wednesday. West Ham and City reached an agreement on Tuesday, with West Ham taking Phillips on loan until the end of the season.

West Ham will cover Phillips’ wages, paying a loan fee, and will have the option to buy him in the summer for approximately £34 million.

Phillips’ move to West Ham is seen as a chance to revive his career and get regular game time after struggling to secure a spot at Manchester City. Danny Murphy believes the move will benefit all parties involved.

Speaking about the move, Murphy expressed, “He’s a talented lad who needs a platform to play. He’s got an England squad to try and get into. I think this could be a good move for him.”

West Ham is expected to announce the signing of Phillips after the medical, offering the midfielder the opportunity to play regularly under a manager who has long admired him. David Moyes is said to be a driving force behind the move, indicating a positive outlook for Phillips.

Murphy also noted, “But when you look at the midfield West Ham has got, Alvarez has been sensational since he’s gone there. But he plays in the holding role. You’ve got Ward-Prowse and Soucek in there. Sometimes Paqueta plays in there. So there’s competition for places in there.”

Phillips’ arrival at West Ham will provide competition in the midfield, but Murphy believes that Moyes and the club would not have invested in the player if they did not intend to play him.

He anticipates that Phillips will make an impact and potentially take the place of Soucek, adding, “He’s a talent. Technically very good, calm, very good on set plays, spots danger, and does his work, puts himself about.”

Overall, the move to West Ham on loan with an option to buy is seen as a win-win situation for all parties involved. Phillips will have the opportunity to play regularly under Moyes, who has a reputation for reviving players’ careers.

City will have wages covered and the potential for a substantial payment at the end of the season. Ultimately, Murphy’s opinion echoes that it’s a great move for all involved.
