Cole Palmer’s ambition to play for the first team was a major factor in Manchester City’s decision to trade the player to Chelsea in the summer, according to Pep Guardiola.

Palmer stood out in the preseason, scoring in the Community Shield and European Super Cup finals, and was destined for a big part at City this year.

But thҽ Manchester City academy left thҽ Etihad Stadium in thҽ summer to seek regular first-team football.

With three goals and four assists in his first ten games for his new team this season, he has somewhat demonstrated what City have missed out on.

This weekend, Palmer will play his boyhood club for the first time since moving, and Guardiola says he has no regrets about the choice to let go of one of the most promising young players in English football.

Guardiola responded, “Very pleased,” when asked about Palmer’s most recent performances. He wanted to play in the game, which was the reason.

‘He has it so congratulations. He is a guy who came from the academy, he’s having success because it’s good for him and wish him the best.’

‘Congratulations for Chelsea and him,’ he added when asked if was a shame Palmer was not still representing City.

When asked if Sterling’s exclusion from England squads comes as a surprise, Guardiola noted that the forward is performing at or close to his best for City. However, he did not address the situation directly.

“He’s playing really good, back in his best moments from what I’ve seen lately,” Guardiola said. “He always creates incredible dynamics, what he did for many years for us and part of the big successes we had.”
