Rio Ferdinand has hilariously demanded that Joleon Lescott hand over his Premier League winners’ medal amid the threat of sanctions against Manchester City.
In February, City were charged with 115 alleged financial breachҽs over nine years, from thҽ 2009/10 season up to thҽ 2017/18 campaign.
Thҽ charges include details relating to player and manager remuneration, accuracy of financial information, not cooperating with an investigation, profitability and sustainability, and not handing over documents as required over five seasons from 2018/19 to 2022/23 campaign.
In an official statement, City said thҽy were ‘surprised’ at thҽ issuing of thҽ alleged breachҽs, and welcomed thҽ matter being reviewed by an independent commission.
Fellow Premier League club Everton were deducted 10 points by thҽ league last week after being found guilty of breaching financial rules. It was a record sanction imposed on a Premier League club.
Following Everton’s point deduction, the Premier League champions are now staring down the barrel with many outcomes possible should they be found guilty, including their titles being stripped.
Discussing the situation on his FIVE podcast, the Manchester United legend said: “I’m ringing Joleon Lescott up if anything happens with City and they get punished, Joleon, I want your medal hand delivered to my house, and I’m wearing that medal.”
Ferdinand added: “That Aguero moment has gone, so, Joleon, just make sure you bring the medal.”
Of course, this is very much a hypothetical situation, and it should be clear that Ferdinand is very much joking.
City famously pipped United to the title on the final day of the 2011/12 season to land their first ever Premier League title, courtesy of a last-gasp Sergio Aguero winner against QPR.
Lescott was at the heart of City’s defence that season and claimed the first of his two winners’ medals, earning the second one in 2013/14.
Whether City are at risk of being stripped of past honours isn’t known, though some think it could happen given the enormity of the allegations against the Manchester club.
In terms of the alleged charges, City are yet to be found guilty of anything, and it could be some time before any resolution is found.
