Pep Guardiola lavished Rico Lewis with praise after the 18-year-old’s stunning performance in Manchester City’s 3-1 win at RB Leipzig.

Lewis, who broke into the team in the second half of last season when the squad were struggling for rhythm, slotted straight in and has continued to improve.

The 18-year-old already has a Champions League goal to his name but was making his first start away from home in the competition as he lined up as an attacking midfielder in Germany.

There wasn’t a better player on the pitch as Lewis ran proceedings and was instrumental in City picking up an important win that gives them control of their Champions League group ahead of a double-header with Young Boys.

Guardiola joked that Lewis’s parents had not blessed him with height but that is all he is missing.

“He’s an amazing, outstanding player. I’ve been a manager for 14, 15, years and lucky to train one of the best players in the world in Barcelona,” he said.

“To find a player who moves really well in the middle, the pockets, holding midfield and full back coming inside, it is difficult to find someone like him. He’s just 18 years old, he has a huge personality, can play in four or five positions, he isn’t scared. his defending is really good.

“Maybe he needs a bit more height but his mum and dad didn’t give him genetics to be taller. Apart from that, he has everything. A fantastic player.”
