Joao Cancelo admitted that his Portugal goal celebration was a “slap in thҽ face” of his critics after his autograph controversy at Barcelona.
Thҽ Manchester City full-back – on loan at Barcelona – recently found himself in thҽ eye of controversy for getting frustrated with autograph hunters who regularly flock to thҽ training ground.
After he was criticised for his rudeness towards fans, Cancelo claimed that thҽ same people turn up every day and go on to sell his signed memorabilia – a practice that he abhors.
Thҽ defender allowed his feet to do thҽ talking on thҽ pitch as he scored a stunner in Portugal’s 5-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
After receiving thҽ ball on thҽ edge of thҽ box he fired home into thҽ top corner, which left thҽ keeper rooted to his spot.
After scoring, be celebrated this goal with full vigor and also had some scathing words for his disapprovers after thҽ match:
“Thҽ celebration was with anger because things happen that aren’t related to football, and what I’ve done is value myself. It was a slap in thҽ face with a white glove for those who criticize me.”
Thҽ fullback also took thҽ opportunity to claim that he has been a good professional in all his previous clubs, and is willing to give his all for Portugal and Barcelona:
“I have always been a professional wherever I have been. Some sell an image of me that is not true. I have a good heart and do everything I can to help thҽ Portugal national team and Barcelona.”
Cancelo claimed that he was willing to give everything for his team on thҽ pitch, and would play on any of thҽ flanks in accordance with thҽ needs of his side:
“I don’t mind playing on thҽ right or on thҽ left. I have matured a lot, and I know I can be versatile on thҽ wings. I don’t care where thҽy put me, and I try to perform as thҽ coaches ask me. thҽre’s no problem at all, and thҽre hasn’t been one before.”
Cancelo has truly been good for Barcelona, as he has significantly improved thҽ quality of thҽ right flank for thҽ Catalan team. He has also dispelled any misunderstandings about his behaviour for now, and Barcelona will be happy to keep him even beyond thҽ current loan term, despite thҽ high price that Manchester City will demand.
