Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims the club have offered veteran full-back Kyle Walker a ‘generous’ contract extension, in an attempt to fend off interest from Bayern Munich.
The 33 year-old has entered the final 12 months of his current contract, and as a result is one of several senior Manchester City players linked with a potential summer exit following the treble triumph.
The England international has been linked with a move to the German club in recent weeks since City brought an end to their treble-winning season.
Now, some fresh behind-the-scenes details have emerged on this particular transfer saga.
According to Martin Blackburn and Dave Kidd of The Sun, Manchester City have now offered Kyle Walker a two-year deal, as they attempt to keep the England international away from the clutches of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
The report states that Walker has been ‘pleasantly surprised’ by City’s offer, believing that it is ‘generous’ given the fact that he has recently turned 33, and feeling that it means he will still have a major role to play in the future of Pep Guardiola’s squad.
While Bayern Munich reportedly remains an option due to a long-standing ambition to play outside of England, it is suggested that Walker has been ‘heartened’ by the proposal placed on the table by Etihad Stadium chiefs.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
@Hefcookies: “This is great!”
@BenW123_: “Still the best RB regardless of age.”
@sunilmcfc: “Walker can still be super helpful. He can be a specialist player, used for games where we need to pocket a pacy winger like Vinicius or Rashford. Plus, experience gonna be huge for the younger players++++”
@Boblachi: “Good news as such. He should sign it right away. No delays. At least the likes of Bayern and others will have a reason to calm down their pressure on the fullback.”
@tevezszn32: “Wouldn’t mind him taking on a fernandinho role.. last season or two just be a capt and motivate the team, come into the game when called upon. Could work out!.”
@KirkyYelnats: “This is good. Now please can we take care of Bernardo. Give the man the offer he needs to stay. Please.”
@GNavilpakam: “Sad they didn’t offer the same for Gundo.”
@DivineDDT: “If we offered this to Gundo, he’d have stayed.”
@umirf1: “Happy if Walker stays but hearing this, failing to get Jude/Rice and only offering Gundogan a 1 year roll-on deal when his asks were a reasonable 2 years on fair wages looks terrible in retrospect. Gundogan younger, captain, bigger influence/impact week on week last season too.”
@LoorLas: “Of all the players who could go this summer, plus Gundo, Walker’s probably the one I’d be least concerned about if he did go. That being said, certainly no bad thing if he stays.”
@a779457: “People need to get over the Gundo situation. It’s been weeks and still they want to moan. Gundo wanted to move. City offered what they thought was fair. End of story.”
@ErlingMCFC: “Gundo WANTED to go, Kyle didn’t. Get over it. Good for City and Walker. Now just offer the same to Bernardo.”
