Manchester City left-back Sergio Gomez has expressed his desire to fight for his place in Pep Guardiola’s side despite reported interest from Burnley.
The 22-year-old arrived at the Etihad Stadium last summer from Anderlecht, with the Citizens opting to spend around £11m on the Spaniard following the departure of Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal.
However, Gomez was a peripheral figure in Guardiola’s first-team squad during the 2022-23 campaign and started only 10 of his 23 appearances across all competitions.
Despite having three years remaining on his contract, it remains to be seen where the left-back fits into Pep Guardiola’s plans.
Nevertheless, the former Borussia Dortmund man is keen to fight for his place in the side, a view he expressed in an emphatic statement about his future amid the ongoing speculation.
Speaking in an interview with AS, as quoted by Sport Witness, Gomez said: “I haven’t talked to [Guardiola] about the next season, but I want to stay there.
“I’m going to go from the first day of the pre-season with a lot of desire to show him that I can have more minutes.”
Gomez, who is currently linked with a move to newly-promoted Burnley, added: “The idea is to stay there. It is my wish.”
These Gomez’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
@JaackGrealish: “Why our fanbase wanting to get rid of him when it’s his first season? The main argument for when Jacky G was getting roasted was “it’s his first season”? He deserves the same treatment. Keep him imo”
@SZ_ctid: “Brilliant squad player that has the same mentality as Ake a few years back and look at him now”
@OneEyedLycan: “Great attitude”
@Siphe_Sihle1: “That’s the spirit we want”
@ftblCraig: “Really do Hope he succeeds”
@ErlingRoIe: “Want him to succeed so badly. He wants it too”
@mattt1395: “A lot of City fans wrote him off but when I saw him in the midfield role, I saw something real promising. He’s definitely a really intelligent player and this type of attitude is what City is all about. Hope he stays!”
@YakumiSarai: “Well, if he is really determined then why not. He just needs to show it in pre-season. If he can then he will stay”
