Pep Guardiola breaks Arsene Wenger Premier League record with Liverpool victory

Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday saw manager Pep Guardiola claim yet another place in the record books.

After falling one goal behind early on, City roared back through strikes from Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish, putting on a performance which the boss later described as one of the best of his City tenure.

On top of three points and some much-needed momentum for City, the victory also had some extra meaning for Guardiola.

It was Guardiola’s 100th home win in the Premier League, coming in just his 128th game at the Etihad Stadium.

No manager has ever reached 100 victories at a single venue faster than Guardiola, who broke the record previously set by Arsene Wenger, who needed 139 games at Highbury to reach a century of wins.

Guardiola lost just one home Premier League game during each of his first three seasons in charge of City and has only lost 12 of his 128 league outings at the Etihad.

This 100th victory could have a significant impact on both City and Wenger’s old side Arsenal, with the two sides still battling it out in the race for the title.

City have now closed the gap to leaders Arsenal to five points, with the two sides having played the same number of games before the Gunners face Leeds later in the day.
