‘So unfair’, ‘we should have sent him out on loan’ – Man City fans react as journalist makes Sergio Gómez transfer claim

Manchester City fans have been reacting to a claim from journalist Jack Gaughan that Sergio Gomez would have left on loan last summer had they secured a senior full back.

Gomez joined City from Anderlecht for an initial £11million in the summer, with the club electing against loaning the Spaniard after failing to sign Marc Cucurella, who moved from Brighton to Chelsea.

His form at Anderlecht was incredible. From left-back, he had a hand in 22 goals in 50 appearances. So, clearly, a huge talent that City have signed for a modest fee.

But the Spaniard has only played 11 times for City, remaining an unused substitute for City in their last eight Premier League matches. He is struggling.

The left back has yet be fully trusted to start matches, according to the Athletic, prompting the club to target increased depth.

City are said to be looking at are Borussia Dortmund star Raphael Guerreiro, Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell and Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney, who is backup to Oleksandr Zinchenko.

According to Jack Gaughan writing for the Daily Mail, Gomez, whose agent is Guardiola’s brother, would have left on loan had they secured a senior full back.

The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

@libz_67: “No wonder we signed him”

@DxBruyneSZN: “We were so close yet so far”

@Sa8_City: “Why every season seems there’s always one or two positions missing. Why can’t we have a decent players at all positions even for 1 season.”

@brandon21871: “We solve one problem but then some how end up creating more. All we needed was a striker now we need wingers and full backs”

@mcfcdvd: “With how our LB search is going, yeah he was always going to stay.”

@mcfcalfie: “He needs a loan, that’s exactly what he needs. His qualities in some games have been excellent but he looks unpolished and doesn’t look mature. Needs a good 1-2 years on loan. I don’t like how we’ve been left short again, I can only hope Txiki is cooking something next window.”

@philcaso: “so unfair to throw him into this type of environment when he’s not ready”

@4xVettel: “He clearly isn’t ready, we should have sent him out on loan anyway.”

@EnggarB: “He is still young and this is his first year. Don’t need to blame him. He needs that experience.”

@mcfcdvd: “Guy will come good in future. Right now he ain’t it for an actual LB.”

@ndndndnddn15: “Attacking wise he’s brilliant in and around the box. Buts he’s too raw, he’s not physically strong enough, his defensive IQ is quite poor, and his tackling isn’t reliable. He can be a top fullback in the future but he needs to be put on loan and gain experience. Maybe 2 years.”
