‘I can see both sides’ – Ten Hag admits doubts over controversial Fernandes goal

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admitted he could understand Manchester City’s frustration at Bruno Fernandes’ controversial equaliser being allowed to stand in the Red Devils’ comeback win at Old Trafford.

The Cityzens went into the derby knowing they needed a win to close the gap on Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

United were the better side in the first half but come the hour mark, Jack Grealish came off the bench to score the opener.

However, as the match approached the latter stages, Fernandes equalised for the hosts in controversial circumstances.

Marcus Rashford was offside in the build-up and while he did not touch the ball, many believe he interfered with play before his teammate’s finish.

The linesman initially raised his flag, but the decision was overruled after a conversation with the referee, and VAR did not intervene with the on-field decision.

It sparked total outrage from the City players, who surrounded the referee in protest as United players celebrated.

“I can see it from the other side as well,” Ten Hag told BT Sport.

“I would be unhappy if I conceded a goal like that because it brings hesitation – it’s a grey area. Also for the referee, a really difficult situation to judge.”

“The rules, it’s a confusing moment for the back line of the opponent. The rules say Marcus didn’t touch the ball and he wasn’t interfering. Bruno came from the back – but I can see it from the other side.”

Pep Guardiola was also interviewed after the match and his frustration was very visible.

“Rashford was offside, Bruno Fernandes, no – intervene Rashford or not? Does it distract our keeper, and distract our central defenders, I don’t know if it’s the rule, but I know were we play.”

Manchester United are now one point behind their local rivals, and have thrust themselves into the title race, something which didn’t seem plausible as the beginning of the season
