Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report by Fabrizio Romano that claims the club is closing in on the signing of Velez Sarsfield starlet Maximo Perrone.

The 19-year-old defensive midfielder established himself as a key player for the Argentinian outfit during the 2022 campaign, featuring regularly in the Primera Division and Copa Libertadores.

Perrone has just a year remaining on his contract and is understood to have attracted interest from a number of clubs including Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Benfica.

City’s interest emerged in recent days and it seems that the lure of Manchester and Pep Guardiola will see Perrone arrive at The Etihad.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano who reported that Man City are close to agreeing a deal for the Argentine youngster, who has caught the eye with his performances for Velez Sarsfield in 2022.

Confirming the news on his Twitter account, Fabrizio Romano has said that City will be proceeding with paying the £8m release clause for Perrone.

Romano wrote on Twitter:

Manchester City will sign Argentinian top talent Máximo Perrone from Vélez, verbal agreement confirmed and here we go — deal at final stages. #MCFC”

“Perrone will not join City Group clubs, but directly Man City right after the Sudamericano Sub20. Deal worth $8m plus taxes.”

The report gathered a number of replies from a wide range of Man City supporters.

@wrumat1: Great signing, great player, a lot of quality and character he showed in our league and in the libertadores Cup.

@Frnado_7: Probably the only signing we’re going make this window.

@MCFC_Erik: He’s incredible, captains his club at just 19 years old

@WattAWildWorld: You just know he’s going to be an absolute steal. Another Alvarez.

@YakumiSarai: The first reinforcement in 2023. I still have my doubts about Perrone, but he has the potential to debunk them. Let’s see what he can bring to the table as City’s player.

@paulfabretti: I’d guess he would be a backup for Philips when the time is right. Possibly even challenge him depending on how Philips progresses.

@RobertLusetich: Rare to find a player so young already a natural holder. Good business by Pep.

@Portlocks: It’s great buying large numbers of young players that may be the future, but what about buying the ready made winger we need now!

@greenmiles55: Need Leao next.
