Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero was allowed the opportunity to lift the World Cup on the pitch in Lusail after a thrilling penalty shootout victory for Argentina against France.

Aguero made 101 appearances for the Argentina first team scoring 41 goals during that time. The 34-year-old appeared in three World Cups for Argentina before retiring last December after being diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmias.

Messi gave his team the lead in the 23rd minute from the penalty spot before Angel Di Maria made it two in the 36th. It was all going swimmingly for Argentina until the 80th minute when Kylian Mbappe scored twice in 90 seconds to take the match to extra-time.

Once again, Messi thought he had done enough to win the World Cup for his country after bundling a rebounded effort home. But, Mbappe had other ideas, netting the equaliser from 12 yards to take the match to a shootout.

Emi Martinez’s mind games got the better of Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni as they missed their penalties before Gonzalo Montiel became the hero, scoring to finally see off the French. Post-match, after Messi, Julian Alvarez and co were given their chance to lift the trophy, Aguero was ushered forward to lift the World Cup on the podium.

Aguero has quietly been involved with the team over the past month, even joining in a few training sessions and awarding Messi the MOTM trophy after the team’s semifinal win over Croatia. He would end up having one of the best seats in the house for the thrilling final as Lionel Messi inspired his country to glory.

The former Argentina and Manchester City striker was seen wearing an Argentina top and shorts after racing onto the pitch after the penalty shootout. John Terry famously did something similar when he donned his Chelsea kit following the Blues’ Champions League triumph in 2012.

The defender was suspended for the final but it did not stop him from celebrating with his teammates after they beat Bayern Munich on penalties. Aguero seemed to copy Terry and the Chelsea legend had a brilliant response to seeing the ex-Argentina international celebrating with Lionel Messi.

Aguero post-match celebrations triggered memories of John Terry putting on a full Chelsea kit and joining in with celebrations when the Blues won the Champions League in 2012.

Watching the scenes unfold after what is being considered the best World Cup final ever, Terry was a pundit on beIN SPORTS and commented: “Aguero has gone for the full John Terry there hasn’t he?! I did it first.”

He later tweeted: “If your going to do it, at least go for it and put the shin pads and boots on! *laughing emoji* *Argentina flag emoji* *trophy emoji* *blue heart emoji*”

Football fans also had a brilliant response to seeing the ex-Argentina international celebrating with Lionel Messi.

“John Terry, no sorry, Sergio Aguero is on the pitch,” one fan wrote on social media. “Sergio Aguero has gone full John Terry mode,” another added.

“Sergio Aguero couldn’t resist a bit of John Terry full kit action,” one other fan tweeted. “Sergio Aguero on the pitch in a jersey. That’s very John Terry no,” added another.

“Sergio Aguero on the pitch with a shirt and shorts on… this could upstage anything John Terry did,” commented one other supporter. Aguero may not have played a part in the game, but he certainly kicked every ball throughout the contest.
