Pep Guardiola doesn’t expect Manchester City to add to their squad during the January transfer window after revealing no names were discussed during a recent gathering in Abu Dhabi.
The window opens on Sunday and City could still look at recruiting at full-back, with Kyle Walker, Joao Cancelo and Sergio Gomez the only senior options, although 18-year-old Rico Lewis has excelled recently.
The Blues did spend just over £14million on Julian Alvarez last January, although he remained on loan at River Plate for the rest of the campaign.
That was City’s first January arrival for the first team since signing Aymeric Laporte in the winter of 2018, activating the central defender’s £57million release clause with Athletic Bilbao.
Guardiola expects this to be another quiet January window, with little transfer talk during his Abu Dhabi meetings with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and director of football Txiki Begiristain during December.
“I don’t think so, I think we’re going to finish [January] in this way. I don’t know what’s going to happen but since I arrived in Abu Dhabi with the sporting director, with Tixiki and everyone, there wasn’t any name on the table,” he said.
These Guardiola’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
@kdbmagician17: HUGE mistake when everyone else is going to strengthen. Can’t continue with a 24 man squad 3 games per week 1 or 2 injuries away from disaster out wide and in midfield
@David_Orsolic: Let’s hope this isn’t the truth… Our width is average at best, from fullbacks to wingers; Walker is playing inverted RB, Cancelo is a right footed left back and Grealish and Mahrez can only cut inside, the gap left by Sterling and Jesus is so obvious
@ali_farah9: We really need to sign a winger. Bring back Leroy Sane
@ThisIsDela: To be fair this would be the answer whether we were signing someone or not.
@mcfcFoland: Not looking good
@JMC_OfficiaI: Please say you’re doing your usual lie to us and are actually gonna sign someone.
@mcitypi: People really gonna believe Pep again they never learn, although I agree we don’t need signings
@whispersconlon: Over reacting. Squad is just fine.
