Football fans were left sickened after watching Rodri’s thunderbolt for Manchester City ruled out for one of the most ‘insane’ handball decisions yet.
Rodri thought he had scored his first Champions League goal for Manchester City in Copenhagen on Tuesday evening.
During the first half in Denmark, the Spanish midfielder rippled the back of the net with an absolute screamer from distance.
The technique on display from Rodri was something else and had it been allowed to stand, it would’ve been one of the best goals seen in European competition so far this season.
However, the goal was eventually ruled out when those operating the VAR system stepped in and asked the referee to go and check the pitchside monitor.
The Spain midfielder was left with his head in his hands after his sensational first-half strike was struck off following a VAR review, with City looking for three points that would secure progression.
Why did they do that? Well, because the ball brushed Riyad Mahrez’s arm a few seconds before Rodri took aim from around 25 yards out.
The Algerian winger could’ve done absolutely nothing about it and his hand certainly wasn’t in an unnatural position either.
But after a prolonged look at a replay of the incident, the referee eventually declared that it was an illegal move by Mahrez and disallowed Rodri’s wonder-goal.
With referee Artur Dias being shown the ball striking the hand of Riyad Mahrez on the pitch-side monitor, social media users have fumed over the current guidelines given to officials.
Gary Lineker wrote on Twitter: “A stunning goal by Rodri ruled out through the absurdity of the current handball law.”
With a Twitter user writing: “Heavens above that’s one of the worst ones yet.”
A third agreed: “Shocking decision.”
With a fourth saying: “Rodri got done so bad. Ruling a goal out of that quality for that handball is so bad for football.”
And a fifth concluding: “That’s the most insane handball decision I’ve ever seen.”
It was really an absolutely ridiculous call, as you’ll see for yourself in the video below…
