Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji shows off his incredible mental arithmetic skills, discusses his move to the Etihad and the form of Erling Haaland.
Akanji signed for Manchester City during the summer transfer window, but you’d imagine it was for his defensive skills and not his mathematics skills, but the latter is certainly impressive.
In an interview, Akanji was asked to do some quickfire sums, and it was no challenge for the Manchester City defender, as seen below.
“The first thing that comes up when you Google yourself is about the fact that you are incredible with mental arithmetic,” asked the interviewer.
“Where on earth does this skill come from?”
“My teacher that I had always made a competition,” responded Akanji.
“In math, like calculating and everything, and at that point I knew I was really good in it because I would always get to the final and won most of the time.”
You know where this is going, don’t you? Well, of course, the interviewer decided to put Akanji to the test – and my word did he pass with flying colours.

The Footage of the Switzerland international working out difficult multiplications at the same speed as a calculator went viral during his time with Dortmund.
City fans were massively impressed with their defender’s ability at maths.
“Bro didn’t even think,” posted one fan on TikTok.
Another wrote: “Genuinely impressive.”
While a third joked: “Should get Jack Grealish to do this.”
We can safely then, that had Akanji failed at being a footballer, he would almost certainly have had a career as a nuclear scientist lined up because he is just stupidly good at maths.
We’re talking human calculator levels of genius.
If he’s half as good a defender as he is at his times tables, Guardiola is onto a real winner with this boy.
