Kyle Walker has undergone surgery after suffering a groin injury to his left leg during the first half of our 6-3 win over Manchester United on Sunday.
Walker, 32, missed Manchester City’s 5-0 Champions League victory over Copenhagen on Wednesday night, after sustaining an injury in the club’s 6-3 win against United on Sunday.
Speaking after City’s European win, Pep Guardiola said: “Kyle will be out a while, weeks. Hopefully, he can go to the World Cup, like Kalvin (Phillips), because I know how important it is for the players.”
Walker has been a key player for club and country in recent years, filling in at both right-back and right-sided centre-back for England under Gareth Southgate.
He has undergone surgery on a groin injury and is now a doubt for England’s 2022 World Cup campaign.
According to an official statement from the club, the surgery was successful and a more detailed prognosis will be provided in due course.
The City star tweeted a picture of himself in a hospital bed. He was smiling and holding a thumbs-up. The tweet read: “As players we have to appreciate injuries are part and parcel of the game we love.
“My operation on Tuesday was a success and now I can concentrate on my rehab and getting back to full fitness. I will be supporting my team mates every day in any way I can.”
The Athletic have reported that Walker is unlikely to be fit for the World Cup. There is a hope at City that he will be able to play at the tournament, depending on how his recovery in the initial stages after surgery goes.
It will come as a blow to head coach Southgate, who has used the former Tottenham ace prominently during his six-year reign.
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Thought it would go down the surgery route, he just hadn’t been the same for a while. Once recovered hopefully back to best ”

“I’ll be gutted for Walker if he misses it, surely his last tournament for England and beginning to look like his last season for us as well possibly. It’d be a really sad end for one of City’s finest over the last five years.”

“Speedy recovery Kyle! However, it baffles me that we didn’t sign another fullback this Summer, there is a massive reliance on Cancelo and Gomez now. Any injury to them and it will be up to Rico Lewis on the right with Stones now injured too and Ake or Laporte on the left..”
