‘Are you mad’ – Thierry Henry’s Bolton joke leaves Carragher and Richards speechless in Erling Haaland chat

Manchester City legend Micah Richards was left speechless after listening to Thierry Henry’s comparison involving Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski.

Both strikers have enjoyed exceptional starts to the season at their new clubs, with Manchester City’s new recruit scoring 17 times in 11 games while Lewandowski has bagged an equally impressive 12 goals in 10 appearances.

Haaland has been the figure capturing everyone’s attention, though Henry made the case for more admiration needing to come the way of Barcelona’s new recruit.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League matches, Henry and Richards were in a debate on who was having the bigger impact of the two.

Richards then asked Henry whether he thought Haaland would be having the same success had he moved to Barcelona, which prompted a random response from the Arsenal legend.

“I don’t know, it’s a different ball game,” Henry said on CBS Sports. “Like I always say, you need to cast the right actor for the right movie.

“What Haaland is doing, that’s the perfect actor for that team. Sometimes you play in another team – I wouldn’t have played for Bolton, are you mad?!” Both Carragher and Richards were speechless following Henry’s outburst before the former City defender just replied saying: “Wow!”

Henry added: “That’s what I’m saying, if you were to play long ball under Sam Allaradyce, I would have left at half time.” Henry’s point appeared to be focused on his style of game not suiting Bolton’s game plan during Allardyce’s reign at the club.

And the French football icon gave a more in-depth dive into the comparison between Lewandowski and Haaland’s start to the season. “Nobody is saying that Haaland is not doing well and the impact is not great,” he added.

“I’m saying that Lewandowski has as big an impact as what Haaland is doing. If you argue the fact that Man City – were they top of the league last year? Were they competing? Were Barca top of the league? No they were not.

“I’m not always talking about the goals or what you do. Some types of players have an impact on what he does and what he brings. For example Gabriel Jesus, you can see what he’s bringing to the team, that winning mentality.

“Not a lot of guys won in that team at Barcelona. You have a couple of the old guard that did it, but not a lot of the guys did it. What Lewandowski is bringing on top of the goals is also how everyone is playing around him.

“You can see how they speak when he’s there, but nobody is disputing what Haaland is doing. What Haaland is doing is stupid – in a good way.”
