The Department of Culture, Media and Sport has issued a comment regarding the status of next weekend’s Premier League fixtures.
The death of Queen Elizabeth II prompted the Premier League and EFL to postpone all of this weekend’s football fixtures as a mark of respect, despite most other sports continuing to play. Man City were due to take on Tottenham today in their seventh league fixture of the season.
There are concerns that next weekend’s match at Molineux against Wolves could now be postponed too. Thousands of police officers from across the country are expected to be redeployed for the Queen’s funeral.
That could put the Metropolitan Police under considerable pressure, with the possibility of drafting in extra resources from around the country to deal with the crowds expected in the capital.
In a new update concerning the status of next weekend’s fixtures, The Department of Culture, Media and Sport has issued a new comment.
Speaking to Football London on Saturday, a spokesperson for the DCMS assured that their guidance given before the Premier League’s decision to postpone games would not change from the guidance provided ahead of the ongoing weekend.
“Whether matches go ahead is a matter for the football authorities. If fixtures do take place, the Met will work with the relevant partners and ensure that appropriate policing plans are in place,” the spokesperson opened.
“There’s no obligation to cancel as far as far as the government is concerned. But it’s ultimately up to the Premier League and EFL to make those decisions.”
Manchester City’s match against Wolves has been selected for TV coverage and brought forward to a 12:30pm kick-off.
Manchester City will be returning to action before next weekend. As confirmed on Friday evening, the Premier League champions’ clash against Borussia Dortmund in European competition will take place as scheduled.
The Bundesliga giants travel to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night for matchday two of the UEFA Champions League.
