‘Txiki masterclass’, ‘Give him a statue’ – Many fans react as report claims Man City could be set to cash in if Douglas Luiz does leave Aston Villa

Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims the club could be set to cash in if Douglas Luiz does leave Aston Villa before the transfer deadline.

Luiz joined Villa from Manchester City for around £15 million in 2019 after spending two seasons on loan with La Liga side Girona due to work permit issues. The 24-year-old has since become a Brazil international and made 116 appearances for Villa.

The midfielder came on as a substitute in Wednesday night’s defeat to Arsenal and almost instantly scored Villa’s short-lived equaliser, direct from a corner. The Gunners have since been reported to have had a £20m bid turned down for Luiz, who has entered the last 12 months of his contract at Villa Park, with the latest claims suggesting that Villa are demanding £40million.

Villa have been in discussions with Luiz over extending his stay at B6 for several months. However, the Brazilian has been touted as a last-minute target for Liverpool, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Arsenal, with the Gunners said to be returning with a second offer.

It has been claimed that Luiz has reached an “agreement” over personal terms with Mikel Arteta’s side, despite earlier reports that Villa would not allow the midfielder to be sold before tonight’s 11pm deadline. However, Villa are not the only club that would make a profit if Luiz does complete a move to the Emirates Stadium.

According to Martin Blackburn of The Sun, Man City are “entitled to 20 percent of any profit Villa make”, pricing his initial move at roughly £15m. Pep Guardiola’s side initially held a buyback clause in his contract, which expired last summer.

The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
