Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola discusses whether the signing of forward Erling Haaland was a factor in making him continue as club manager.
Haaland, who has enjoyed a formidable start to life in the Premier League, scoring nine goals in five matches, moved to the Sky Blues from Borussia Dortmund in June.
It’s still early days, of course, but Erling Haaland is currently scoring an average of two goals per game, an astonishing record. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to see Haaland become a success at City, even for Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola has entered the final 12 months of his current City contract, and the Catalan has so far remained tight-lipped on his long-term future.
Whether he signs another deal with the Premier League Champions will not be influenced on the Blues’ new number nine, according to the Catalan himself.
The City manager was asked today at the pre-match press conference for tomorrow’s game against Aston Villa whether his new star striker would benefit from keeping him at the club.
The Sky Blues boss made it clear that Haaland wasn’t the reason he stayed, but has enjoyed working with him, as well as other new additions, thus far.
“I work for City, not for Erling. He doesn’t work for me, he works for City. We are really pleased about him, a lovely guy,” said Guardiola.
These Guardiola’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
