‘I’d take him anyday as part of the Bernardo deal’ – Some Man City fans react as Romano Fabrizio make De Jong transfer claims

Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims the club did had interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong but a transfer this summer was impossible.

The Dutchman was at the centre of one of the biggest transfer sagas in recent memory, with his own club seemingly adamant that he had to leave during the window in order to solve their financial woes.

De Jong was most heavily linked with the Red Devils with new United boss Erik ten Hag keen to be reunited with his former Ajax prodigy. Chelsea were reported to have also had the midfielder in their crosshairs as Thomas Tuchel looked to add to his midfield.

However, as per reports, he always wanted to stay at Barcelona, but a move to work with Pep Guardiola may have temped him away from the Camp Nou.

According to Fabrizio Romano, while Manchester City do love Frenkie De Jong, a deal was impossible this summer due to the salary the club had already given Erling Haaland when he signed.

Had Pep Guardiola’s side not signed Erling Haaland and handed him the wage packet they did, Frenkie De Jong may have left Barcelona this summer.

The Dutch midfielder’s wages at Barcelona are extremely high, and for Manchester City to add two high wage packets to their already stacked bill in one summer would have been extremely hard to maintain.

The report shared on Twitter gathered a number of replies from a wide range of Man City supporters. With Many believing the most logical way to solve the Bernardo Silva conundrum would be to propose a swap deal for Frenkie De Jong.

“if Gundo + Bernardo are potentially leaving Next year we absolutely need a new CM, mcatee isn’t QUITE there yet(will be soon) and De Jong is just a great player i’d take him anyday.”

“This just adds more to the BS Bernardo rumours over the last two months. If Bernardo REALLY wanted to go to Barca, and City liked De Jong this much, the deal would have been done. Remember we are offering Bernardo a new contract (double) so salary would have been no issue.”

“You can negotiate a lower salary if he really wants to leave. Anyway he’ll get fed up of being treated like a villian this season and we can work something out with him and Bernardo.”

“Let’s go rescue him come next transfer”
