Manchester City fans have hailed the club’s decision to name Ilkay Gundogan as the captain for the 2022/23 season.
Manchester City’s players and staff have now voted for the club’s new captain, following the departure of Fernandinho this summer.
With Fernandinho having left the club after nine years at the end of last season, there was likely to be quite tumultuous change in the group this term as the players voted for a new captain.
According to The Telegraph, Ilkay Gundogan have taken over the armband from the Brazilian who returned to his native country to join Athletico Paranes.
The Germany international is one of the more senior players in Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, and has played an integral role in their success in the past few seasons.
The new leadership group is completed by midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, defenders Kyle Walker and Ruben Dias with Rodri having been promoted for the first time, it has been reported.
The official Gundogan-De Bruyne captaincy axis got its first run out on Saturday afternoon as City swept Bournemouth aside with consummate ease.
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Super glad Rodri is there 🤩, seen has a future leader. Walker deserves it being an instrumental part of this squad. KDB & Gundo no brainers.”

“KDB should have been City no. 1 then Gundo follows. Nice to see Rodri and Kyle being part of the group. Well deserved.”

“First player Pep signed and he’s signing a new contract, anyone who says he’s not deserving of the Captain position must be a casual fan of the club.”

“Honestly, he deserves it. Well done Gundo 💙. To everyone questioning this decision, don’t you think the players would know best considering they’re the ones who play and train together? We only get to see a fraction of the time they spend with each other, so pipe down.”
