Premier League fans are convinced the Erling Haaland vs Darwin Nunez rivalry is being overhyped and see one clear winner.
The arrival of Haaland ends City’s long search for a specialist centre forward having failed in their attempts to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham last summer.
The Premier League side activated his £51.2m release clause in May but now the transfer window has officially opened, he has been confirmed by the club.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have reached an agreement with Benfica for Nunez in a transfer initially worth £64 million.
City pipped Liverpool to the Premier League title by one point this season and they’ve both dipped into the market for young strikers with the world at their feet.
Some aren’t fully convinced by Nunez yet though. The 22-year-old burst onto the scene this year with 34 goals for Benfica and he impressed in the Champions League.
Liverpool regularly play with Roberto Firmino or Diogo Jota up front, who are different in stature to Nunez. On top of that, the Uruguay international simply hasn’t got a sample size the same as Haaland’s.
Haaland scored a whopping 39 goals in all competitions this campaign while battling injury issues throughout.
Coupled with the fact he’s been on the world stage since 2019, supporters think comparing the two strikers already is quite silly.
“This is not a debate, Haaland is a fully developed player over several seasons. Nunez is no more than a 1 season prospect. ”

“Haaland is clearly a different level of footballer, he’s an absolute freak and a generational talent. ”

“So Haaland was getting compared to Mbappe and as the 2 stars to take over messi and Ronaldo now he’s getting compared to someone you didn’t even know 2 months ago.”

“They’re trying so hard to force a rivalry.”

Some are on the side of Nunez however.
“I’m not sure Haaland can compare to this special special talent Nunez is. Darwin should be scoring 30 goals a season minimum for his potential..else it’s a massive failure. ”

“Halland is more of a tap in striker while Nunez has it all. Very hard to chose but Nunez comes first”

“Both are good signing, at least on paper, as both Man City & Liverpool have been playing without a serious striker, especially a big body one, for too long and now they have the missing piece!
The better signing? It really depends on how the teams adapt; as balance is the key! ”
