Pep Guardiola has revealed that he is not interested in signing a new contract with Manchester City in the near future but reiterated his desire to sort out an extension further down the line.
The Spaniard is contracted at the Etihad Stadium until 2023 and could extend that, but expects to work elsewhere at some point in the future.
Since his appointment in 2016, Guardiola has extended his stay with the reigning Premier League Champions on two occasions, firstly in 2018 and again in 2020.
A report last week seemingly confirmed City have been pushing to tie Guardiola down to a new deal and had hoped to finalise an agreement once this season comes to a close.
However, in a new interview with Sky Sports this week, Guardiola has made it clear it will only be towards the end of the 2022/23 campaign if he does extend his stay at Manchester City.
“If I extend my contract, it will be at the end of next season,” Guardiola said.
“Before it’s not going to happen. I’m here since many years and I need to see how we feel together, me and the team.”
He continued: “I’d like to stay ten more years – but we have to take time for that, absolutely.”
These Guardiola’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“He’s 100% staying longer. our signings and extensions would all want to know his future and he probably just wants to keep it under wraps for now”

“He should do it now at the end of the season. If he waits until then, the media are going to question him all the time and the squad and fans will all be unsettled. It’s not smart to wait till then”

“City isn’t the club to wait to the last moment to know if they should look for a new manager. If Pep doesn’t renew now then he is leaving after the end of his contract and the club will start looking for his successor from now.”

“One of the biggest reasons Haaland signed was to play under Pep, makes it pretty obvious that Pep will eventually extend his contract. If Haaland chose City’s project over everyone else’s, it is clear that Pep is in City’s long term plans.”
