‘Yes please’, ‘Sign him up ASAP!’, ‘Perfect Gundogan replacement’ – Many Man City fans react to the club’s interest in United transfer target

Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims the club have entered the race to sign Barcelona midfielder and Manchester United transfer target, Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong’s future has been called into question, with a number of European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Gerrmain and Liverpool, said to be interested in his signature.

The Spanish powerhouse are understood to have paid around £77m to bring the midfielder to the Camp Nou on the back of a starring campaign, in which he helped Ajax reach the semi-final of the Champions League.

Since his move to Catalonia, though, De Jong has struggled to showcase the abilities that made him such a desirable asset for Barcelona in the first place. De Jong has been a starter in 26 of the 33 games played in La Liga 2021-22 but has been replaced 12 times, 10 of them with Xavi Hernández as the manager.

There have been multiple rumours of Erik ten Hag’s interest in bringing De Jong – whom he worked with at Ajax – to Old Trafford as one of his first United signings this summer.

Manchester City are now threatening the chances of a potential reunion, having decided to enter the race to sign de Jong.

According to an emerging information on Thursday via Jonas Hen Shrag, Manchester City are interested in the Barcelona midfielder, with Pep Guardiola an admirer of the player, who he wanted to sign him in 2019, before his move to Catalonia.

Shrag continues by stating that while both Barcelona and the club’s first-team head coach Xavi are keen to keep Frenkie De Jong at the club, the Netherlands international wants to play in the Champions League.

He went ahead to states that whilst Manchester United have been interested long before Erik ten Hag arrival, at this moment, these factors seem to reduce the chances of De Jong coming to United.

In reaction to the report shared on Twitter by City Xtra, many Man City fans have expressed their thoughts and opinions.

Rodri, De jong and KDB would be the best midfield in the world. Gundo isn’t a starter anymore and Bernardo is going to leave in my opinion”

“He’s great but he’s 31 mate, so when it’s time for him to step out, we have a ready made replacement.”
