Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims the club is exploring the market to sign a new midfielder in the summer, as Fernandinho‘s future is currently hanging in the balance at the Etihad Stadium.
The 36-year-old midfielder, who has spent the last eight and a half years with the Citizens, signed a one-year contract extension in the summer, which is due to expire in June 2022.
While the ageing midfielder may be past his unparalleled best, and with the Brazilian international no longer commands a starting place as Rodri is first-choice under Pep Guardiola, he continues to remain a stellar operator on and off the field.
With the Brazilian’s contract expiring at the end of this season, it is unclear if he will continue to play for the Blues beyond this season.
According to the latest information of Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are said to be ‘exploring’ the transfer market to bring in a central midfielder, with Fernandinho set to make a decision on his future at the end of the season.
Romano claimed that Pep Guardiola is keen on the Brazilian extending his stay at the club for additional season, but the decision ultimately lies in the hands of the veteran.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters – here are some of the best responses.

“We really need one even if Dinho stays, our midfielders backups are Gundo who might leave in 2023 and Dinho who is aging. Preferably Pep trusts McAtee and Palmer and Doyle but regardless, one more won’t harm us.”

“I wonder who we are gonna go for, but I fancy Bissouma please..”

“They won’t find a substitute for Fernandinho, just move on. There’s no one like him on the market.”

“We aren’t going to pay first choice prices for a backup considering Rodri’s only 25. It’ll be an all-purpose midfielder most likely that’ll either come on a free, or come at a reduced price. Don’t expect a big name player.”

“Lavia will replace him. No need to buy at all.”

“At the age of 36, he’s still perform better than most of any DM in the world. He even won MOTM against Sporting.”
