UEFA have dismissed Manchester City‘s appeal over the length of Kyle Walker‘s Champions League suspension.
The England international was sent off late in City’s 2-1 loss to RB Leipzig on matchday six in the group stages in December, after kicking out at Andre Silva.
A red card would usually only see a player banned for a single game but the severity of the incident has seen Walker’s suspension increased.
UEFA decided that the necessary punishment for Walker is a three-match ban. When announcing the infringement, European football’s governing body described his offence as ‘assault’.
Manchester City had launched an appeal to UEFA over the Kyle Walker’s three-match ban and were looking for a reduction to the suspension by highlighting the number of games missed by the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Thomas Muller, Idrissa Gueye and Andriy Yarmalenko after similar incidents in recent European campaigns.
However, UEFA have dismissed the appeal and reiterated that the England right-back, who missed the first leg of their last-16 clash with Sporting as a result, will also miss both the second leg and the first game in the quarter-finals.
A statement read: “The appeal lodged by Manchester City FC is dismissed. Consequently, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body’s decision of 25 January 2022 is upheld.
“The CEDB had decided to suspend Manchester City FC player, Mr. Kyle Andrew Walker, for the next three (3) UEFA club competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible, for assaulting another player.”
He will miss a further two Champions League games after not traveling to Lisbon as Pep Guardiola’s side ran riot with five goals inside an hour, with Bernando Silva, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling on the score sheet.
