Kevin De Bruyne is the Professional Footballers’ Association’s Male Player of the Year, beating three Liverpool stars in the running after his outstanding season for Manchester City.
The Belgium playmaker’s award breaks a two-year run of Liverpool winners, with Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah having claimed the prize over the previous two seasons.
Van Dijk was on the shortlist again along with teammates Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was named the young player of the year.
The 29-year-old becomes the first male City player to collect the accolade, with previous winner Virgil Van Dijk also shortlisted again for his exploits in Liverpool’s title-winning 2019/20 campaign.
De Bruyne registered 13 goals and a record-equalling 20 assists and is determined to help the team go one better again next season.
De Bruyne is joined in the PFA Team of the Year by outgoing teammate David Silva but there is oddly no place for Sterling. Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Henderson, Mane, and Andrew Robertson hog five spots for Liverpool while Caglar Soyuncu (Leicester), Nick Pope (Burnley), Jamie Vardy (Leicester), and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal) round out the list.
Manchester City fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was announced that KDB had won the PFA Male Player of the Year.
