Director of football Txiki Begiristain is set to leave Manchester City next summer, ending a tenure that began in 2012. Fans were still celebrating City’s victory against the Premier League over APT rules when the news broke. Begiristain has been instrumental in the club’s success since Pep Guardiola’s arrival in 2016, with Guardiola describing him as “the most humble person I’ve ever met.” The search for a successor has begun, with names like Hugo Viana and Andoni Zubizarreta being mentioned.
Guardiola’s close relationship with Begiristain dates back to their days at Barcelona, with Begiristain playing a key role in Guardiola’s appointment as the first-team manager. Guardiola’s success at City would not have been possible without Begiristain’s support and the club now faces the task of finding a replacement to continue their winning ways.
