A report has revealed the chances of Pep Guardiola becoming the new England manager. The Football Association (FA) is open to appointing an interim manager to wait for Guardiola to take over the job once his contract at Manchester City expires in 2025. However, Guardiola has earmarked the months between December and February to decide whether he intends to stay at Manchester City or leave, potentially affecting the FA’s strategy. The decision-makers would prefer to know Guardiola’s decision as early as possible, but the high-profile tactician has his own priorities as well.
Despite dominating club football, Guardiola has not ventured into international management. However, he has hinted that managing a national team in the future would be appealing. Guardiola is known for taking his time before signing contract extensions, as seen when he extended his deal with Manchester City until 2025. The chances of Guardiola managing England are considered remote, with concerns about the FA being able to afford his annual salary of £20 million.
Guardiola previously stated that an Englishman should manage the England national team in 2017, indicating he may not be interested in the job. The Manchester City legend seems to be sticking to his word, showing full belief in his decision. Despite the prospect of coaching one of the most talented teams in football and ending their trophy drought, Guardiola does not appear to be putting himself forward as Gareth Southgate’s successor.
