Manchester City have reportedly reached an agreement to sign New York City FC left-back Christian McFarlane, beating out competition from several top clubs. As part of the City Football Group, negotiating the deal with New York City may have been easier. McFarlane is expected to make the switch to England at the beginning of next year, having already given his word to Manchester City.
McFarlane, who was born in the UK but moved to the United States at a young age, has come through NYFC’s academy and made his senior debut in June. With additional appearances under his belt, both at club and international level, the 17-year-old has drawn interest from various teams. Manchester City’s urgency to secure McFarlane is highlighted by the fact that he turns 18 at the end of January, which changes the rules for British teams signing foreign players under that age.
By signing McFarlane to a senior contract early next year, Manchester City can protect him from being poached by other clubs in the future. This move underscores the high regard in which the club holds the young defender, who has shown promise with his performances for NYFC and on the international stage.
