Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes that Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has the potential to score a double hat-trick in a Premier League match, something that has never been achieved in the Premier League era. The Norwegian international has already been in top form this season, scoring four goals in his first two games, leading Wright to believe that he could potentially score six goals in a single game.
In the history of the Premier League, the most goals scored by a single player in one game is 5, achieved by Andy Cole in a match against Ipswich Town in 1995. However, there have been instances in English football where players have scored 6 goals in a single game. Arsenal’s Ted Drake scored all seven goals in a 7-1 win over Aston Villa in 1935, and England World Cup winner Geoff Hurst scored 6 goals in a match against Sunderland in 1968.
Wright notes that Haaland has a good chance of achieving this feat if he is allowed to stay on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has shown a tendency to keep Haaland on the pitch for the entirety of matches, giving him more opportunities to score goals. With Haaland likely to receive more playing time following the departure of Julian Alvarez, it will be interesting to see if he can meet Wright’s lofty goal of scoring six goals in a single game.
