Iliman Ndiaye has already shown Manchester City fans what he can bring under Enzo Maresca
Iliman Ndiaye may not have produced a spectacular Manchester City debut, but there were enough encouraging signs against Coventry City to suggest the new signing can become an important player for Enzo Maresca.
The Senegal international started on the left wing as Manchester City secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Coventry at the Etihad Stadium. It was his first appearance for the club after completing a deadline-day move from Everton.
Ndiaye was never expected to completely transform City’s attack in his first game.
After all, he had only spent a matter of days training with his new teammates. Maresca’s system also demands specific movements from his attacking players, particularly when City have possession.
Still, the debut provided supporters with a useful first look at what Ndiaye could eventually offer.
And there is plenty to like.
Ndiaye showed flashes of his quality
The most important thing from Ndiaye’s debut was not necessarily what he produced statistically.
Instead, it was the glimpses of his individual qualities.

City have plenty of players capable of moving the ball quickly through passing combinations. Ndiaye offers something slightly different.

Instead, the winger needed to remain higher up the pitch in the final third.
The space behind him could then be used by Josko Gvardiol.

Manchester City supporters should therefore resist judging Ndiaye too harshly based on one performance.
The winger has arrived at a club where the tactical demands are considerably different.

The positive is that Ndiaye already possesses the underlying qualities required to succeed.

Ndiaye fits that project.

That is significant for a player who had only just joined the club.
Maresca had already spoken positively about Ndiaye’s ability during training, particularly his one-on-one quality and his ability to operate in the final third. Those qualities were among the reasons City moved for him on deadline day.
The Coventry match therefore represented the beginning rather than the finished product.
The signs are encouraging for Manchester City
There is an important distinction between saying Ndiaye was excellent against Coventry and saying he showed enough to excite City supporters.
The second statement is much more accurate.
He did not dominate the match.
He did not create a host of chances.
He did not score or provide an assist.
But he showed flashes of the qualities that could make him an important member of Maresca’s squad.
His forward running was promising.
His work rate was encouraging.

Ndiaye could become a major player for Maresca
Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Coventry was not a vintage performance.
Erling Haaland’s first-half header ultimately decided the contest, while Coventry created opportunities that could have changed the outcome. City nevertheless secured their third consecutive Premier League victory under Maresca.
Within that context, Ndiaye’s debut should be viewed positively.
The winger was part of a team that did enough to secure three points while still having plenty of room for improvement.
For Ndiaye personally, the biggest challenge now is understanding exactly what Maresca wants from him.
Once that happens, Manchester City could see a much more influential player.
The manager has already identified the tactical adjustments Ndiaye needs to make. The player now has the opportunity to learn from those instructions and apply them.
That should excite City supporters.
The early signs are there.
Iliman Ndiaye does not need to become a star overnight. He simply needs to continue adapting, improving his positioning and building relationships with his new teammates.
If he does that, Manchester City may soon discover that their deadline-day signing can become one of the most useful additions to Maresca’s new-look squad.
For now, his debut was a promising first step.
And there is every reason to believe there is much more to come.
