Manchester City face first major European test under Enzo Maresca
Manchester City will begin their Champions League campaign with a difficult away trip to FC Porto, as Enzo Maresca prepares for his first European match in charge of the club.
The meeting at the Estádio do Dragão represents an important early examination of the new Manchester City era. Maresca has overseen three Premier League victories so far, but European football brings a different level of pressure and tactical complexity.
City responded to their Community Shield defeat by beating Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Coventry City in their opening three league fixtures. That run gives the Blues confidence heading into Portugal.
However, Porto also enter the contest in excellent form.
Francesco Farioli’s side have won their last five matches and have made a perfect start domestically. The Portuguese giants will see this Champions League opener as an opportunity to turn that impressive domestic form into a major European statement.
For Manchester City, meanwhile, victory would provide another encouraging sign that Maresca’s methods are beginning to take hold.
Enzo Maresca faces his first Champions League challenge
This match will carry extra significance for Maresca.
The former Chelsea manager succeeded Pep Guardiola as Manchester City’s head coach in June 2026, bringing the club into a new tactical era after Guardiola’s long spell in charge.
Maresca has enjoyed a strong start domestically, with City winning all three Premier League matches. Yet Porto away is arguably the most demanding fixture of his early reign.
The Champions League requires managers to adapt quickly to different styles, atmospheres and tactical approaches. Porto’s home advantage should make this particularly uncomfortable.
A victory would strengthen the feeling that City have adapted quickly to life under their new manager. The good news for Maresca is that City appear to have developed a solid defensive platform during the opening weeks of the season.

City are expected to continue with a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Gianluigi Donnarumma should start in goal, with Abdukodir Khusanov, Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol forming the expected back four.

Those absences could affect the Portuguese side’s depth, particularly in midfield and attack.
Nevertheless, Porto have enough quality to make life difficult for City.
Diogo Costa is expected to start in goal, with Alberto Costa, Nehuen Perez, Jakub Kiwior and Francisco Moura forming the defensive line.
Pablo Rosario should operate as the holding midfielder, with Alan Varela and another midfield option completing the central unit.
Up front, William Gomes, Andre Silva and Pepe are expected to form the attacking trio.
That front three could cause problems if City allow Porto’s wingers to receive possession in advanced positions.
William Gomes vs Josko Gvardiol could be decisive
One of the most interesting individual battles could take place on City’s left side.
William Gomes is expected to operate from the right for Porto, putting him directly against Gvardiol.
Gomes has been one of Porto’s standout performers during their recent run, and his direct approach gives Farioli an important weapon.
The Portuguese side will want him to stay wide and attack Gvardiol. If he can force the City defender to remain deep, Porto could prevent City from building their preferred attacking rhythm.
Gvardiol, however, will have another responsibility.
He must defend the wide channel without becoming isolated or leaving gaps inside for Porto’s forwards to exploit.
If Gvardiol wins that duel, City could significantly reduce Porto’s attacking threat.
Porto’s 4-3-3 against City’s 4-2-3-1
The tactical battle should be fascinating.
Porto are expected to use their familiar 4-3-3 formation, allowing their wingers to stretch Manchester City’s defensive structure.
City’s 4-2-3-1 offers greater protection through the double pivot of Enzo Fernandez and Elliot Anderson.
That midfield pairing could be extremely important.
Porto will want to move the ball quickly into wide areas before City can establish defensive control. City, meanwhile, will look to prevent Porto from creating clean attacking situations.
The longer the match remains controlled, the more comfortable City should become.
Maresca will not necessarily need his team to dominate every minute. Instead, City can manage the contest, retain possession when required and wait for opportunities to expose Porto’s defensive structure.
