Manchester City recently won a legal battle with the Premier League over their Associated Party Transactions (APT) rules, with City claiming the rules were unlawful and that the Premier League had abused its dominant position. While the Premier League stated that City was unsuccessful in the majority of their challenge, some rules were found to not comply with UK law. The rules were put in place in 2021 following Newcastle’s takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

Ian Wright discussed the situation on The Overlap’s Stick To Football, expressing disbelief that City cannot comply with the Premier League’s rules. City’s general counsel, Simon Cliff, emphasized that the APT rules were deemed unlawful by the tribunal for three different reasons and that any kneejerk reactions to change the rules could lead to further legal proceedings and costs.

Cliff also noted that City’s position is that all APT rules have been void since 2021, and if they are changed immediately, it should be of greater concern to clubs. Wright suggested that City’s desire to challenge the rules stems from their wish to have more freedom to do as they please, highlighting the challenge of countries owning football clubs and wanting to operate on their own terms rather than following regulations set by governing bodies.
