Pep Guardiola is gearing up for his ninth season as the manager of Manchester City after his team secured four consecutive Premier League trophies. Following the 2024 European Championship, where 14 City players represented their countries, Spain emerged victorious over England in the final. Gareth Southgate has resigned as England’s manager, sparking speculation about Guardiola potentially filling the role. However, Guardiola has previously stated that he believes national team managers should be from the country they represent, suggesting he may not be interested in the England job.
Gary Lineker discussed the possibility of Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp becoming the next England manager during a recent segment on The Rest Is Football. Lineker expressed that while he believes an English manager should ideally lead the national team, the proven track records of Guardiola and Klopp make them attractive candidates. Guardiola, currently under contract with Manchester City, has had tremendous success with the club, but his stance on national team management may eliminate him as a potential replacement for Southgate. The English Football Association may need to consider other options for the position.
With Guardiola set to enter the final year of his contract at City, the discussion around his potential move to the England role intensifies. The Spaniard has achieved remarkable success with City, but his belief that national team managers should be from the country they represent may hinder any interest in the England job. While Guardiola’s credentials make him an attractive option, his previous statements suggest that he may not be open to taking on the role if approached by the FA in the near future, according to both Lineker and Guardiola himself.
