Manchester City has caused concern among Barcelona officials by expressing interest in Pau Cubarsi as a potential transfer target. The 17-year-old centre-back is the latest Barcelona youth player rumored to be considering a move away from the club, as European teams explore transfer opportunities due to Barcelona’s financial struggles.
Recent deals between Manchester City and Barcelona include Ilkay Gundogan and Joao Cancelo swapping clubs last summer, as well as Ferran Torres departing City for €55 million in January 2021. Cancelo even completed a season-long loan to Barcelona following a reported training ground disagreement, but the Catalan club’s financial constraints may prevent a permanent deal, potentially opening the door for a swap.
Manchester City has shown interest in various Barcelona players in the past, with young defender Pau Cubarsi being the latest to catch the eye of City officials. Cubarsi, under contract with Barcelona until 2026, has already made several La Liga appearances and featured in the Copa del Rey and UEFA Youth League matches this season.
Manchester City’s interest in Cubarsi has reportedly caused “panic” at Barcelona, with officials rushing to renegotiate the teenager’s contract to ward off City’s advances. Barcelona is particularly concerned about a discreet termination clause in Cubarsi’s contract that could allow him to depart for a low fee this summer.
While Manchester City is one of several admirers of Cubarsi, it remains uncertain whether a potential move would see him join the first team or develop at the City Football Academy. The City Football Group’s connections across Europe could also provide an appealing loan option for Cubarsi if City decides to make a formal approach.
